김창열이 입체에 관심을 두기 시작한 것은 1980년대부터이다. 회화작업을 위해 캔버스, 나무판, 종이, 신문지 등 다양한 매체를 시도하던 그는 1986년, 물을 채운 두 개의 원형 유리구를 방석 위에 배치한 작품을 선보이며 입체 작업의 가능성을 탐색했다. 이후 잠시 중단되었던 입체 실험은 1990년대에 다시 본격화된다. 김창열은 “2차원의 그림 속에는 넘을 수 없는 한계가 있다”는 깨달음과 함께, 물방울 형태의 유리를 제작해 천자문이 새겨진 상자 속에 넣거나 모래 피라미드 위에 설치하며 공간적 확장을 시도했다.
이번 전시에서는 김창열의 입체 및 설치 작업을 아카이빙한 영상 또한 함께 공개된다. 처음으로 ‘물방울 화가’ 김창열이 2차원을 넘어 3차원으로 나아갔던 예술적 여정을 확인할 수 있는 기회이다.

The exhibition is the third installment in the “The Cabinet of Waterdrops” series, featuring primarily three-dimensional works from the museum’s collection. It spans multiple spaces, including the exhibition hall and adjoining hallways, and presents both previously displayed and never-before-seen pieces. Together, these works invite visitors on a journey that blurs the boundaries between two- and three-dimensional art.
Kim first turned his attention to three-dimensional work in the 1980s. Before this, he had experimented with a variety of media—canvas, wood panels, paper, and newspaper for his water drop series. In 1986, he introduced a work featuring two spherical glass spheres filled with water and placed on a cushion. However, he did not immediately continue this line of exploration. It was in the 1990s that he revisited three-dimensional work, believing that “two-dimensional paintings have insurmountable limitations.” He created glass water droplets and positioned them inside boxes engraved with the Thousand Character Classic or atop sand pyramids, seeking to expand his art into spatial dimensions.
The current exhibition also features an image archive documenting Kim’s past three-dimensional and installation works. This marks the first opportunity to witness Kim’s artistic journey beyond two-dimensional (2D) work into three-dimensional (3D) expression.
